What is Spinner / Vestibular Training?
Balance, coordination, and core control are important for all sports, but especially figure skating. Vestibular training, aka. spinner training, is aimed at improving your sensorimotor system that contributes to balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordinating movement with balance.
Spinner training isn't just for improving your rotational skills for jumping and spinning, it will also help improve balance and reaction time for all your skating skills. Because spinner training can dual directional, you also build up vestibular stability for all types of turns, like twizzles, and opposite rotation jumps and spins.
Who is Spinner / Vestibular Training for?
All levels and ages, and all types of skaters, can benefit from spinner / vestibular training. Whether a skater is just beginning to learn a two foot spin, or working on triple jumps, spinner training will improve stability, rotational speed, rotational awareness, and core stability. The sooner you start spinner training the better. Vestibular training is important for all disciplines, including dance, synchro, theater on ice, pairs, in addition to single skaters.
How does Spinner / Vestibular Training work?
All training starts at slow rotational speeds and speed is increased over time. Initial sessions are 10 minutes. As the student developes, speed is increased, and session time is increased. Spinner / Vestibular Training works best when done consistently, building muscle, core, and reflex memory. A minimum of 1 session per week to start, 2 to 3 sessions per week recommended. Like everything else in skating, consistency is key.
For freestylers, "flying", is also incorporated into spinner training. Flying, using the spinner, is a key exercise to help build jump rotational awareness and reflexes.
